Can I get the fine lowered on my traffic ticket?

Posted by Allison Blackwelder | Dec 20, 2016 | 0 Comments

Short answer: Maybe.

In South Carolina, state statutes provide a range for the monetary penalty of each type of traffic offense. The fine listed on your ticket is the monetary amount within that range that is assigned by the court--after adding administrative court costs--to which your case has been assigned. (Note: Most courts in the state have chosen to charge drivers the same fine amount within a few dollars of others.)

In short, it is unlikely to have your fine amount reduced if you plead guilty to the offense charged on your ticket. Nevertheless, there are exceptions to the "rule" above, and you could have the fine reduced under those special circumstances. Speaking to an experienced attorney is an important step in understanding whether a fine reduction is possible or even the best strategy to fight your case.
